10. French – 129 Million Speakers
The French language is not just spoken in France, it is also used in Belgium, Canada, Rwanda, Cameroon, and Haiti. You might also be surprised to learn that 30% of the English language is made up of French words.

9. Malay-Indonesian – 159 Million Speakers
Malay-Indonesian is spoken in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. There are many variations in the dialect of Malay but they are all based on the same root language.

7. Bengali – 211 Million Speakers
Bengali is spoken mainly in Bangladesh and is quickly spreading to parts of India too. In fact the population of Bangladesh is growing so fast that Bengali is always moving up the list of popular spoken languages.
“Hello” in Bengali is ‘NAMOSKAR’ or ‘PRONAM’.
6. Arabic – 246 Million Speakers
Arabic is spoken in the Middle East and other countries such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Egypt.
It is one of the oldest languages in the world and it`s popularity is very high because it is the language of the Koran.

5. Russian – 277 Million Speakers
Russian is spoken in Belarus, Kazakhstan, and parts of the U.S. It is also the language of space, astronauts have to learn to speak Russian before blasting off.

4. Spanish – 392 Million Speakers
With the exception of Brazil, Spanish is spoken in all of South America. Like portuguese it is Latin based and so has many similarities with the Portuguese language.

3. Hindustani – 497 Million
Hindi is India`s most spoken language and due to high immigration over the past years it is also spoken in many other countries too. It is one of the fastest growing languages in the world and expected to overtake English and become the second most spoken language in the world.

2. English – 508 Million Speakers
English is spoken in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, the U.S., Australia, Zimbabwe, the Caribbean, Hong Kong, South Africa, and Canada.
It is also the universal language for the air so every pilot must learn english to be allowed to fly.

Mandarin is the most popular language in the world mainly because it is spoken in the most populated country on the planet. It has double the amount of speakers as English but it is also one of the most hardest languages to learn.
