Scuba divers exploring the crystal clear waters of Portugal were shocked to find this enormous fish swimming along the Portuguese coast.
Scuba diver and photographer Miguel Pereira took these photos of this enormous fish and shortly after many other divers arrived to also take shots of this rare oceanic creature. The strange fish never posed a threat to the divers and seemed to love the attention.
This rare sea creature is actually a sunfish and while these fish are famous for growing to large sizes none have ever been seen this enormous size before.
The ocean sunfish is also called a common mola and is the heaviest known bony fish on the planet. The average fully grown adult tends to weigh between 247 and 1,000 kg.
Sunfish are usually as tall as they are long making them seem round shaped similar to the puffer fish. They eat mainly jellyfish but have to consume huge amounts to maintain their large size.
Females sunfish produce the most eggs out of any other known vertebrate. They can lay a crazy 300 million eggs at a time.
Because of their large size sunfish have very few predators. Sea lions, killer whales, and sharks are the only carnivores that have been found feasting on sunfish. While EU, regulations have banned the fishing of sunfish there are still many Asian companies that illegally hunt sunfish.
Ocean sunfish have been found floating on the surface of the water soaking up the sun and this how the fish derived it’s name.
Despite their enormous size sunfish pose no danger to humans, they are extremely docile creatures. The only recorded incident were somebody was hurt by a sunfish was when one crazily jumped into a boat and landed on a child.
