Just a few months on after the closing ceremony for the Rio Olympics and the Olympic village that held thousands of athletes from around the world now stands in ruins.
These pictures were released to the public recently and it sends a depressing message around the world.
Hundreds of thousands of Brazilians took to the streets protesting before the biggest sporting event in the world took place because so much of the country`s money was being invested in the construction of the Olympic village.
And now the world can see why.
Schools are in poor condition, hospitals are underfunded, the roads are in such bad condition it is impossible to drive on them and the police are in short supply which means crime is out of control. So instead of investing money into the country to try and bring a little stability the Brazilian government decided to spend billions on an Olympic village.
Rio is the second largest city in Brazil and thanks to corrupt politicians and poor planning the city is in debt to international creditors for millions of dollars. Rio also owes over 900 thousand dollars to a local energy company for powering the Olympic events.
The beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro is bankrupt. In fact during the Olympic games the police went on strike because the city didn`t have funds to pay their salaries and yet they somehow managed to find the funds to build the Olympic village.
The swimming pools that were used to break records are now left broken themselves and the legendary Maracana Stadium has been abandoned and left to the elements.
Thieves continue to enter the Olympic village stealing anything that`s worth taking while vandels destroy what`s left.
The future of these neglected buildings remains uncertain, but maybe the rest of the world can learn a lesson from this.
