In order to warn the world of the increasing danger of climate change Italian artist Lorenzo Quinn has built giant hands sculptures and put them on display in Venice.
Quinn is famous for using body parts in his art work and his latest project shows two giant hands rising from the canal. It looks like the hands belong to someone who is drowning in the canal and it’s Lorenzo’s attempt for people to stop and take note of what is happening around the world.
Quinn chose to display his Support art project in Venice because the city is currently in huge risk of being under water within a few years because climate change is causing the seas to rise.
In fact many residents have already started leaving the city before it becomes too late. Back in 2009 you would have had great difficulty finding a property for sale along the canals and what was on market used to sell for top dollar. Today there are hundreds of properties on the market and prices have seen a thirty percent drop in value.
Even though the tourists still continue to flock to Venice the city has lost half of it’s residents in the last thirty years. It is possible that before long the only people in Venice will be tourists.
There are some precautions currently being taken to try and prevent the Italian city from sinking. The Italian government has spent around 5 billion dollars on 78 underwater gates to try and prevent the city sinking any more but whether these gates will be effective is unknown at the moment. Only time will tell.
So if you have never been to Venice then maybe it’s time you visited this beautiful city before its gone.
