The very first bone china was produced in England in the 1700’s by potter Josiah Spode. For over 200 years the process was kept secret and so it was almost exclusively made in just one city in England called Stoke-On-Trent. From there it was hipped all over the world. Many tried to copy the properties of the china but none could match it because the secret ingredient bone was not known. The potters in the city became incredibly rich from the proceeds but in the 1900’s things would change.
The secret ingredient became known to others but also in more recent times modern production of porcelain includes other materials giving similar qualities without having to use ground animal bones.
In the city of Stoke-On-Trent there is an impressive museum where not only will they show you the full process of bone chine but you can actually get involved in making something for yourself out of bone china. It also has some original giant kilns and a whole host of interesting historic areas covering everything from ornate china, to tiles to toilets.
If you are not a vegan or vegetarian you should try some marrow bone. It if full of flavor and packed with goodness. Recently some top restaurants have started serving it as a speciality on the menu.
